Kerala An Organized Chaos
ORGANIZED CHAOS
Let me start with driving in Kerala, it is an organized chaos. In relation to number of vehicles on the road, condition of roads, and number of pedestrians, accidents are very few in Kerala. I am writing about heavily travelled areas in Kerala they are near by cities and in side cities. When I travelled in Kerala by car most of the time I sat in the front seat. Always I thought, the car I am in or the car travelling next to ours going to hit. But, not a scratch that is called talent. If a person like I, try to drive in Ernakulam will hit at least five other vehicles in five minutes. Driving in Kerala is a unique talent that you will not find in any driving lessons or schools. A driver must develop this skill rather fast in order to survive on the road in Kerala. For vehicles in Kerala a horn is the most important component. Lots of creativity going on in making very advanced horns for vehicles in India. In order to drive in Kerala a person must be totally in organized, aggressive, cunning and with no regard for traffic laws.
Helmet law in kerala is very funny. Only the driver is required to ware helmet. Most of the time either wife, children or a friend ride in the back seat and in case of an accident their life is not important for the Kerala traffic laws.
I don't know if I should commend on the condition of roads in Kerala. It is like thousand people from a small room trying to get out same time through a narrow door. Kerala has been working for ages to modify the main high way NH 47. Some reason this project will not be finished at least for another 10 years. Roads are full of pot holes. In rainy season you can put a boat in some of these holes. Some areas traffic blocks are very normal for drivers. Two wheelers are the smartest passengers in Kerala they don't even need any road to get where they want to get.
NH 47 is the major high way in Kerala running all the way from south end to north end. One of the most heavily travelled roads in India. Both sides of this high way is well landscaped. Landscaped with all the trash and garbage collected from cites near by this high way. Especially one area impressed me a lot. North of the big city Ernakulam, near by Kalamacheary, there is a huge garbage dump. When I visited Kerala two years back this dump was small. This time I noticed it has grown so big. On rainy days smell from this dump sight give (pleasant) ya., aroma for travelers. Rich people and dignitaries travelling in this area may not notice because they are in an air conditioned car with tinted glass. Poor people don't complain. First of all, those who live next to this dump are living in the government property illegally and this dump is providing some income. People go in to these garbage dumps and pick cans, bottles, metal and plastic to sell to recycling places.
There is a saying in Malayalam "I can't swallow, it is too bitter and I can't spit it out, it is too sweet" This is what my feeling about Kerala. Kerala used to be a beautiful country we could call God's own country. Unfortunately, greed, disregard for humanity and nature has changed this land in to a money making quick scheme. Some people blame poverty and high population in Kerala and India. I don't buy that argument. Today India is not a poor country. India has the means to clean the environment and improve lives of ordinary people. What India lacks is honest leaders in the government they put national welfare above their own pockets. Look at Singapore. Singapore is not any larger than Kerala and population is much higher. People in Singapore drive and create garbage. Only difference they know how to manage traffic in their country and how to dispose waste. Streets in Singapore are so clean if any one get caught littering will be fined.
I hope some day people in Kerala will open their eyes and minds to see how bad the condition of life in Kerala.
thanks
